In 2012, John Graham launched the SAHITA online training business with the first focussed South African online building and home inspector course. Since then more than 500 South Africans have been trained and certified by SAHITA as building inspectors. Many have started their own businesses; others work in Government, municipalities and in the property insurance sector.
SAHITA is now the leading online training academy in the SA property inspection industry. We are widely recognised for the excellent standard of training material which we’ve developed to be fully compliant with South African building laws, regulations, standards and systems.
You can now get the latest news, insights and breaking news of the latest in the South African housing and building industry.
SAHITA is the first building inspection academy to equip South Africans with an all-round knowledge of South African building methods and South African building regulations and standards – including SANS 10400.
SAHITA training combines detailing training on building compliance and building methods with practical knowledge on how to conduct a building inspection and compile an inspection report.
Two new laws – the Property Practitioners Act and the Sectional Title Schemes Management Act – are designed to improve consumer protection for home buyers and home owners. These new laws will result in a massive growth in the demand for home inspection services in South Africa. Elsewhere in the world the demand for independent property inspection services generates billions of US dollars in inspection fees.
SAHITA training provides new and existing home inspectors and other property professionals with a head start in this exciting and fast-growing sector of the property industry. SAHITA is working closely with experts in the training field to ensure that its official accreditation will meet the standards of the new Building Inspector qualification
With the South African government’s emphasis on consumer laws and because the public has become more and more aware of their consumer rights, the South African home inspection industry is forecast to grow rapidly over the next 10 years.
It is expected that South Africa will follow the United States trend where nearly 8 out of 10 homes sold are inspected by independent home inspectors before they are sold – generating more than US$3-billion in annual inspection fees.
More than 22 000 houses are sold monthly in SA and all of these buyers are prospective customers who would benefit from home inspections. This is the vast potential of the home inspection market
SAHITA has also launched and funded in 2016 a new non-profit organisation the National Association of Building Inspectors of South Africa – see www.nabisa.org.za for more details. All SAHITA graduates qualify for membership of NABISA.
The SAHITA and NABISA training benchmarks for home and building inspectors have now been recognised by one of South Africa’s leading banks (the Standard Bank of South Africa). Various municipalities and other government bodies have also funded SAHITA training for inspectors in their employ.
Home inspection”, known as “property surveying” in Britain, is one of the most exciting business opportunities in South Africa and in many overseas countries. In the US home inspection is a US$3-billion a year industry.
Ettienne Jansen van Rensburg has spent 28-years at strategic and project level in the consulting, municipal and construction environment, working in South Africa and neighbouring countries. Ettienne assists John Graham in developing and updating SAHITA training materials. He holds a National Diploma (Building and Civil Engineering); he is a graduate of SAHITA and also works as a Master inspector for HouseCheck.
Adam is the newest member of the SAHITA team. His background is in high end residential construction and project management. Adam is working to create new and engaging course material for the existing SAHITA courses whilst also developing new courses. If you have feedback about the courses he would love to hear from you, contact adam@sahita.co.za.
